Today In Much Needed Light News: A Leo Boniface Trick Shot

Almost all golf news, outside of tournament cancellations, does not feel particularly newsworthy during a still-unfolding global pandemic.

So while we all sort out what really matters and try to maintain perspective, light news will be needed to pass the time while we try not to think too much about human suffering taking place.

So to kick off this new phase of our quarantined life, a hat tip to Golf.com’s James Colgan for spotting the latest trick shot from Leo Boniface. Enjoy that reaction, and DO NOT try this at your local simulator. Even at a safe six-foot social distance!

Never Worry About The Old Course First Tee Shot Again

There is no more nerve-wracking tee shot in golf than the opening hole at the Old Course.

There’s the history, the gallery and the mystery of whoever is watching behind those tinted Royal and Ancient windows. Oh, and it’s about a wide of a landing area as you can get.

And I’m confident, should you be worried, that this gem nobly shared in response to a Zac Blair question, will alleviate all concerns you will look foolish should the Old Course opportunity arise. Thanks to reader Brian for catching this.

Note that it appears the ball remains in bounds. Glad the tees were up!


Better Than Most: Video And Story About The Baylor Full-Court Putt

KWTX’s Tyler Boudin talked to Ky Carlson after his full-court, $5000 made putt at halftime of Saturday’s Baylor-Texas game. The incredible third putt of the contest went viral, including millions of views via social media (below).

In these tough times, it’s always fun to read about a fun feat. Boudin writes:

When Ky Carlson's third attempt drifted right of the green set up on the baseline, the trend appeared to roll on to another day.

"As soon as I hit it, I know I pushed it off to the right, but as it goes past halfcourt, it starts to curl back in," Carlson said. "It keeps getting closer and closer, and then all of a sudden, it's pandemonium. It pops on the green and goes in. Nobody could believe it, including me, so that was pretty amazing."

Carlson was a contestant in the Mattson Financial Group putting contest that features three separate putts worth $250, $500 and $5,000 respectively. Ironically, his first attempt was the worst of the three, missing the green by a few inches.

"(Baylor) kind of wants us to go pretty fast. I get to the second one and it's a dead aim," Carlson said. "That one barely lipped in and out. I thought that second one was my chance."

Double-Hit Loophole Artists: Nice Try, But USGA Confirms Penalties Await!

I know you all saw our Morning Drive chat about this on Monday, but as much as I’m enjoying the creativity and skill of trickshot artists who think they found a loophole in the new Rules of Golf, they have not.

As I outline here for Golfweek, the trick shot that spawned a European Tour social video attempting the double hit ignores the very simple word “accidental” in the new more relaxed Rules. The story explains the penalty players will enjoy if they use such a ploy to get around a tree.
