Expected Kiawah Media Whinging Starts Early As Downpour And General Misery Kick Off Glory's Last Shot!
/With a 75-minute bus ride, 96 degree heat index, thunderstorms in the forecast and the advent of Twitter since the last "what were they thinking" major in 1987, experts have long predicted the 2012 Glory's Last Visit To Kiawah PGA Championship could provide some of the finest whinging, moaning and outright media crankiness of the modern era.
With a massive downpour Tuesday at Kiawah while Tiger Woods was talking to the media--and still could not be heard even with a microphone due to the rain noise--the scribblers surprised forecasters who saw Thursday as the likely commencement of the cavalcade of griping.
Though as one connoisseur of media moaning (and an expert at it), I feel we are just warming up. Literally. Here are a few of the Tweets as of 1 p.m. ET, viewed here from the West Coast where it never rains in August but where the PGA will not ever visit again because it's not inconvenient enough:
The Storms at Kiawah have knocked out the Direct TV signal in the media room - This REALLY could be a long week... #Kiawah
Ah, now for the PGA at Kiawah Island. I understand we print press will be bused daily from Wyoming.
For '91 Ryder Cup stayed in a haunted bed and breakfast in Charleston. Shuttle bus had just as many zombies on it this morning.
Greetings from Kiawah Island, South Carolina, for the 94th US PGA Championship. Monsoon! Trapped in media centre. Please send beer & donuts.
The rain is now utterly biblical. 10 yard walk to the dining room for lunch could be a disaster.
Raining so hard at Kiawah now Tiger couldn't hear last couple questions in press conf. Ended by joking, "Let's go play some golf, guys."
Serious leaks in media center roof cuts short end of Tiger presser.
