Getting In The Mood: Colorado Golf Club

The Solheim Cup tees off starting Friday at Colorado Golf Club and while I know aren't interested in this, longtime readers know my motto: A so-so team event is still more interesting than 99% of stroke play tournaments. (It'd be nice if we had a little more tension between the European and U.S. teams, but it's only Thursday.)

Ron Sirak does a nice job setting up the intrigue with the fresh-faced teams that are all just happy to be there. For now.

In the meantime, David Krause of the Denver Post says Colorado Golf Club--a major championship hopeful that hosted the Senior PGA--will be different this time around for the ladies, with fairways widened back out to the way Coore and Crenshaw envisioned.

The fairways will be much wider, with just an average of a 6-foot transition zone of 2-inch rough.

"It's going to play how it's supposed to play," U.S. team captain Meg Mallon said last week. "It's going to play how Coore and Crenshaw wanted it to play. The native grass should come into play, and the native grass is going to come into play. There's nothing that's going to catch the ball."

But even though the fairway landing areas are wide, placement in the fairways will be key. The width is designed to tempt players out to the edges in search of the best angles into the greens. A well-played aggressive line will create a great scoring opportunity. An aggressive line not executed properly brings the native grass very much into play.
