Saving The WGC Match Play From Itself
/As John Strege noted earlier this week, the tour's attention moves to Tucson where tournaments seem to go to die for reasons not always under their control.
The worst kept secret in golf is that this is the final WGC Accenture Match Play at Dove Mountain, not entirely because the players so despise the Jack Nicklaus course built specifically for this event and carefully supervised by the PGA Tour. But mostly because Accenture is out and the next sponsor will dictate where the match play goes. Assuming a sponsor is found.
While I understand that a $12 million sponsor sacrifice necessitates that corporate entertainment's needs supercede the quality of course or format chosen, the fact is, a sponsor will benefit from a strong event wherever and however it is played.
With that in mind, I offered some suggestions as to how the WGC Match Play can be improved and re-imagined to save the lone match play event on the tour.
