The Daily Mail's Mike Dawes reports on the statement issued by Rory McIlroy's Dublin-based communication consultants announcing the breakup of Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki, prompted by the sending of the wedding invitations.

'The problem is mine,' he said. 'The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails.

'I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.'

John Huggan says a trip to Monte Carlo, Tweeted by Rory just three days ago, went wrong.

While that is undoubtedly true, there was still widespread surprise at the sudden nature of McIlroy’s overnight announcement, in which he claimed to be “not ready for marriage” only days after the wedding invitations were sent out. He and Wozniacki had reportedly met in Monte Carlo last Monday to “thrash out” differences in their nearly five-month long engagement. But the end result was a parting of the ways.

James Corrigan reports on the difficult press conference at Wentworth, where McIlroy appeared just hours after sending out the statement, calling it uncomfortable and subdued and describing McIlroy as crestfallen.

"Look, I'm no different than anyone else," the Northern Irishman said. "Everyone has been through breakups, and it's obviously very, very difficult. But look, I'm here to try and concentrate on this week and answer questions about golf, and that's what I'm going to do."

As recently as three days ago McIlroy Tweeted photos from Monte Carlo and took issue with a report on the wedding date. Wozniacki has also been active on Twitter after withdrawing from a tournament in Rome to meet McIlroy.
