Great News? The Barclays Is Headed To Trump Ferry Point Ensuring It Won't Host A U.S. Open Any Time Soon!
/Nothing against the Jack Nicklaus-designed and Donald Trump-to-be-operated Trump Ferry Point, but the news reported by Joe Passov that the New York, gulp, muni is going to host the 2017 and 2020 Barclay's would seem to lock it up for the time being.
This means any interest the USGA might have had in going there for a U.S. Open is not happening any time soon. The U.S. Open is locked up through 2021, but after the success of Pinehurst this week, the USGA could do much worse than asking the resort if it's ready to sign up again in 2022.
On the topic of a return engagement for Pinehurst, Luke DeCock and Chip Alexander of the Charlotte Observer queried both sides and while no one is talking, the resort sounds like they want a return engagement.
“What we love about these championships is it allows us to start putting more color photos in our hallways that are full of black-and-white photos,” said Tom Pashley, Pinehurst Resort’s executive vice president. “We’ve got a great history and tradition that we love to celebrate, but we have to earn our relevance with each generation of golfers. Staying in a regular role of hosting national championships, USGA championships, keeps us relevant.”
